Fun with Photostory

This week in EDTF we were required to create a Photostory. I enjoyed this project a lot more than I originally thought I would. We were required to create a presentation consisting of narration, pictures, a background song and text. Through this project I learned how to successfully narrate a slideshow so that background music isn’t distracting. I also learned how to add different transitions between each picture. This is something that I got creative with because I never have before. At first I was nervous because I’ve never created something like this but now that it’s over, I’m glad it happened! I really liked being able to be creative and use my own pictures and music. I used the song “I Feel Home” by Of a Revolution because I thought it went nicely with the overall presentation. I showed pictures of my friends, family and hometown. This is something that will be very helpful in many ways. In the future I can use it for fun. For example I think it would be a good idea to use this program to create presents for people such as my mom on mothers day. But on a more serious side, I could use it for future employers for presentations. Next we have to create a team video and I’m also a little nervous to start this adventure. I haven’t created many videos so this will be a big learning experience for me.

Individual Podcast Journal

This week in EDTF we were required to create a podcast individually. This was very challenging for me. I have never tried to create a podcast or use some of the tools we used such as Lame and Audacity. For this task, we were required to create a 90 second podcast on any topic. We had to use the tool audacity to create this.

I learned a lot throughout the process of making this project. I learned about how to us the general tools in Audacity. That was the first step, but once I got used to it I learned how to add background music. With a little help from tutorial videos, which I found online, I was able to fade the background music in and out.

I’m so excited about all the things I have learned in the past week. This is something I have been wanting to learn but have not had the right resources. This is a skill I will definitely use in the future. My sister is a video journalist for the Washington Post in Washington, DC. I have watched her use programs such as Audacity and she is so good at it, but I never attempted to try until now. Now I can show her and future employers what I can do!

October 23rd let the websiting begin!

This week in EDTF was once again a success. We began to work more on our websites and I can’t wait to continue working on it each week. My peers and I used MS Expression Web in order to achieve our goals of making a website. I have never used this program before so it took some time to get used to and I am learning more each day. First we started off by adding hyperlinks to our first page. You can do this by right clicking on the word you want to add a hyperlink to and then insert the web address. Another thing we did was inserting tabs to the first page. I did this by inserting “interactive buttons” which looked like a filing tab. I need to ask Professor Punnipa more about this feature tomorrow in class. I had questions about how to connect the tabs to different pages in my website, such as different modules.

I am exciting to keep on adding more things to my website as the weeks go on. I think this sort of thing will be really helpful for my future career and any future careers. I will be able to impress employers with all my website creation knowledge. A lot of my bosses will probably be older and not have enough knowledge on how to create things like this on a computer. I hope to get good at making websites and to learn as much as I can in the next few weeks.

More to come in the future! My website will be up in the next week!

October 16th-Powerpoint

This past week we learned more about using Microsoft PowerPoint. I had some trouble using the animations but after a couple hours I compiled a presentation. I did my presentation on the Lock Haven YMCA. I enjoyed this project because whenever I give presentations in class I use a PowerPoint format. This was a very educational project for me.  I think the most useful tool for me to use was the Snipping tool. I have never experienced this before and I will definitely use it a lot in the future.
The project we did was to create a professional presentation for a recreational center. Ironically, I talked to some of my sisters and brothers today about jobs and what I need to do to find employers. I sister mentioned her resume and how she wrote down all the computer skills she has. Now I can add to mine that I am educated in using PowerPoint. Last Friday we also had to go to a Alumni Sport Administration panel in Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center. During this panel, one former student mentioned being able to use all sorts of programs and how it will impress organizations who are looking for interns.
Every day I sit down to reflect on my school work, I am thankful I am in this class. I am learning so much valuable knowledge that will help me in the future. As long as I stay on top of my work and try to learn as much as I can, I will be well off.

Publisher and Excel- October 9th

This week in EDTF300  I learned so much about using Word Publisher. I don’t think I’ve ever used the program before. Usually I would just copy and paste pictures and text into a word document. I also learned a lot about excel and how to sharpen my skills. I’ve used excel a bunch but I never had to use MailMerger, this will be a good thing to know for the future.

In Publisher I was taught by both my professor and by my classmates on how to efficiently make a poster. As a team we created a poster about the upcoming sporting events over homecoming weekend. Over the weekend there is a football game , men’s and women’s soccer games, and a swimming quad-meet. If the class decides to choose our poster to blow up to poster size, I think it would be useful to hang up on campus. This will be a good marketing tool for the sports teams. The poster has the time and location of the event so it is easy to understand. My group also made the decision to insert attention grabbers in each corner. I never even knew publisher had those pictures that you could customize! One group member even had the good idea of making a pie chart about the average attendance of each sports team. Maybe this will show fans that some teams need more support than others. To create this pie chart we went into excel and made a chart with the sports teams across the top and below each one the number of fans in attendance. Then I selected that chart and clicked insert pie chart. This is a useful object but it was very simple to make!

We also then learned how to use MailMerger, which is something I’ve never even heard of before. This was a difficult thing to use for me, but with more practice I will master it. I wrote up a fake letter to people who donated to a cause. With this letter, I merged a database that was created in excel. It was a hard task but I got it accomplished.

October 2-poster project!

This week in EDTF we got into groups and worked on our first group project. I'm in a group with a few of my friends and we work really well together. We created a poster for this years Homecoming. We made a list of soccer games, swimming meets and wrestling matches. I learned a lot about using Publication and all the techniques required. Hayley Zinn showed me how to use to templates and add pictures. I've never used Publication before, I always just made posters on word. I'll definitely be using it from now on, it's such a helpful tool! I learn so much every class and I'm thankful that everything I'm learning about can be transfered into real life situations.

For my internship this summer I had to create posters but I did it all on word and by hand. Next summer I have the same internship and I will use everything I learn to impress my managers. I am currently on my personal computer but once I get on a school computer I will upload the poster here. We wanted to keep the poster simple and clean so it's not too distracting for the viewer. Can't wait for class tomorrow!

September 25th- crossword and website fun

This week in EDTF we learned a lot about websites and tools that we can use. Dr. Hossain taught us how to create our very own website. I learned how to add hyperlinks for outside sources. I also learned how to create a crossword puzzle on discoveryeducation.com. I have an example below of a puzzle I made up about soccer. This week we also focused a lot on the booklet we are in the process of making. This booklet can be on anything involving sports and technology. I will be creating my booklet in the form of a Philadelphia Union media guide. It will list all the players, front office staff, history, etc. I’m really excited to start working on this booklet because its good experience for future jobs.

In the future I would love to move back to Philadelphia and work for either the Phillies or the Union. I did an internship with the Union two summers ago and I had a blast. Being able to create pamphlets such as this one will be very beneficial. I’m sure that at any beginning job I will have after graduation, I will have to create a lot of projects like this one. I’m happy I’m in this class and expanding my knowledge and skills that will help me in the future!
